Hello everyone,

My Laptop just crashed and on restarting WinEdt 5.5 has suddenly stopped
being able to compile my documents into PDFs using the 'PDF Texify'
button, instead I get a pop-up message:
"Pdftexify failed to create a PDF file, for possible explanations start
the command from the command prompt". I've been using this version
WinEdt unchanged for about 2 years so this is quite a shock!

If I execute the same Pdf, texify action from the command prompt my
documents are generated, though I am asked for a file name several times
and the process takes much longer than a single button click.

To generate the command prompt code I followed the advice listed on the
following post:
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.editors.winedt/2694

and entered the recommended command:
texify.exe --pdf yourdoc.tex

Unfortunately the post was never followed up so I don't know how to
restore my WinEdt to it's normal state:

I've created the an example .tex document and have included the output
of the command prompt (both below). I'd really appreciate some advice,
I'm writing my PhD thesis (which contains lots of equations and figures)
so am generating pdfs continuously (normally after each equation or
paragraph). Having to go through the command prompt each time is really
going to be a real drain on the writing process...

Minimum example:

\documentclass[a4paper,8pt]{extreport}
\pagestyle{plain}

\begin{document}
Hello world.
\end{document}

This is what appears at the command prompt:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

I wouldn't panic. Your document is still there. You can still compile.
And you hopefully have some backups. Small problems like this can
happen and they are in general rather easy to solve.

What do you mean by "asked for a file name"? Which file? Your
log-file/terminal output doesn't show any question.

If your document really has trouble to find some files it is
perhaps not a winedt problem.

Well you can use Alt+Tab to switch to the command line and F3 on the
command line to repeat the last command and F7 to choose between
recent commands. It is not so much slower.
[...]
Looks fine.

And -- worse case scenario -- simply reinstall WinEDT/MikTeX. The whole
process takes <30-40 minutes, which is clearly trivial compared to the
time you've already invested in the work itself.

By the way: has the name of your file blank spaces?. If this is so,
just change the name to one without blanks and try again....

Apologies if some of you receive this twice, I'm still learning how to use the forum...

Thanks for your messages everyone. In the end I un-installed and re-installed WinEdt (a re-install 'over the top' didn't fix the problem). This only worked after switching the multiple user accounts on my laptop (1 limited, 1 admin) all to admin and back again. Strange...
Working with limited accounts is something enforced by my University's IT directors btw, not my choice.

Oh and apologies for not attaching the command output for the erroneous file, as this was for my large and incomplete document this was around 20 pages of text (which I didn't think would be welcome on the forum).

Thanks again, I have my button back!
