dear all,
recently i was lucky: i "subsistute" my old original IBM ThinkPad laptop
for HP ultrabook Envy and in the same time change my OS from XT to W8.1
and WinEdt from 8.1 to 8.2 ...

new machine is realy fast, but i unexpectedly experienced, that WinEd
too often freezes (i receive message "program not respond"). Some times
this happens at almost every compilation of my LaTeX documents (I use
recent MikTeX), after reseting a machine, i'm able normally proceed ten
to twenty compilations and then troubles start again. The same happens
if i erase content of TaXAuX map. For short while i can work normaly,
after then troubles start again.

so, i'm lost in this trouble. i don't have an idea what causes this
misbehavior and what to do to eliminate it. i will appreciate any
suggestion.

I have never observed anything like this myself and have no idea
either. Perhaps trying to reset some of your compilation settings
to basics would shed some light.

new machine is realy fast, but i unexpectedly experienced, that
WinEd too often freezes (i receive message "program not respond").

For example if you are using TeXAux folder to redirect output
disable this option in Execution Modes (or rename this folder to
something else) and see if this is causing problems in your
particular situation.

If the problem persists then in Execution Modes disable all options
in Console Attributes section and press Apply to All. Now WinEdt
will execute the compilers in basic Windows Console (black box).

If the problem persists pay attention exactly which compiler is
causing problems and what is being displayed in the console when
the problem occurs. Also, is it WinEdt that stops responding or is
it the compiler launched from it. Pressing and holding Shift+ESC in
WinEdt should cancel compilation and make WinEdt responsive again
(but the resulting aux files might end up corrupted as a
consequence because TeX will not flush all output buffers if it is
killed in this way). Disabling the option Wait For execution to
Finish might also be a useful test if your problem persists.

Installing packages on demand may sometimes cause problems with
TeXify. Depending on how you installed MiKTeX there may be an issue
with UAC and your privileges (on Win8 or 7 or Vista with UAC
enabled) it is not enough having Admin privileges. For certain
actions you must execute application with elevated privileges.

The fact that clearing TeXAux folder seems to resolve the situation
for a while indicates that perhaps something non-WinEdt related is
causing your problems with compilation. You will have to do some
testing and provide additional information if you need more help.
Nothing related to compilation has changed between WinEdt 8.1 and
8.2 and I personally did not encounter any issues with Windows 8.1
- it is a stable OS and way superior to XP in every respect.

Best regards,

alex

Dear Alex,
thank you very much for fast answer. After sending my letter I shutdown
computer again for while and then turn it on again. And surprise: all
troubles have disapeared! Until now I have made more than 200
compilation of 10 different files, most of them are very short -- just
tikzpictures -- and I had experinced only two crushes. The circumstances
of the first one was not clear, but the second one happened when I
compiled latex file, of which pdf was open in Acrobat Reader (XI).
After closing WinEdt and Reader and reopened WinEdt, I could then
continue with compilation several times without any problems.
