Can't get WinEdt 8 as the default program to open TeX files

I think it was a mistake to install WinEdt 8 when WinEdt 6 was my default
program to open TeX files. As soon as I uninstalled WinEdt 6, my computer
(running Windows 7) had no default program, but WinEdt 8 wasn't registered
as a program, and so the Control Panel wouldn't let me make it the default.
I also tried the Configuration menu, where I checked all the file types I
wanted WinEdt 8 to open, but that didn't help. Windows 7 refused to budge
on this issue. What can I do, short of uninstalling WinEdt 8 and
re-installing it? (Can I do that with the same registration number?)

Try re-installing WinEdt 8 over the old one and, during the installation,
be sure to select the option "Associate TeX Filetypes with WinEdt".
