Augustin (and others),
Seems that it is not that simple: I have replaced BACKGROUND_MODE=2
with BACKGROUND_MODE=1, but then appeared problems also with
LINE_NUMBERS_MODE, CURRENT_LINE_MODE,RIGHT_MARGIN_MODE, etc......I
updated my configuration file and everything was a mesh......so I
uninstalled 8.2 once again and reinstall 8.1. I will wait for the
official announcement and the instructions for upgrading from 8.1
to 8.2....I would like to know if the only problem will be with the
Backgrounds.ini file or there will be some othe ini files that need
to be modified before upgrading (and in which sense)....thanks
anyway
Well at this point you should click on the help and see the
admissible values and their meaning for all *_MODE values in this
section:-) It is quite simple (value 2 should now be 1) as
explained there....

What's New in Help explains which sections have been changed and
why. It mostly has to do with the new color management and
dpi-awareness. For example, bookmarks no longer use images but are
custom drawn at the appropriate size for your font size/ dpi.

Furthermore, Status Line and GUI Page control have been completely
redone (of course for the better but they have to be modified from
scratch for those that modified their old ones). And a few very
minor properties have been added or removed from other sections as
explained in What's New; then consult the manual for details...
There aren't that many changes beyond the above mentioned ones.

And to preempt: if you customized highlighting by entering RGB
colors directly in keywords and switches (as was the case in older
versions) then your highlighting will not automatically adjust to
dark background (how could it?). If, on the other hand, you take a
look at the the COLORS section you can customize your settings so
that they will be compatible with this feature if it is important
to you. New defaults have been modified to take advantage of new
features and improve WinEdt adaptability to different Windows
color schemes and dpi with new users in mind. Old users can ignore
these features or else adapt their old customizations to them. For
example, in the new color definitions you will find (among many
others) a new named color:

xclComment="clSlateGray"

(and, of course, clSlateGray is defined under Standard and system
colors as clDarkSlateGray="#2F4F4F"). Default highlight settings
now use xclComment for everything associated with comments. And
that's not all. The same for strings, etc...

For dark background this color is simply redefined as:

xclComment="clLightGray"

in the appropriate color scheme.

This is a powerful functionality for those that care. It is still
possible to enter RGBs directly. *_MODE parameters in background
schemes are a rare incompatibility -- they have to be reduced by
one if you previously customized them because references to color
index have been removed. If you want to refer to color index use
background-sensitive named colors RGB_0..RGB_F (as defined in
COLORS section).

Help has been updated with all the changes and the explanation of
the new (extended) COLOR value parameters. If color customizations
are important learn how to do them properly in the new version.
Otherwise, you might as well stick with the old version since
you're not taking advantage of the new feature...

In places where colors were allowed in *RGB and *COLOR format,
only the second one is now available and it refers to the new
color specifications (which allow old $BBRRGG, new #RRGGBB values
and named colors -- including RGB_0..RGB_F). Named colors have
many advantages and can be managed in a single section which makes
modifications easier and more consistent (for those that care).

And, as always, those that want everything as it was and do not
need or care for new functionality upgrading is perhaps not a good
idea (even if it only takes a few minutes to adjust their
customized settings) until you need it eg. on some new computer
with 192dpi resolution.

This is not a cosmetic upgrade: it actually introduces new
functionality which requires certain changes to WinEdt default
settings.

Upgrade is free for post-WinEdt 5 users: take it or leave it. It
is impossible to please everyone...

Best regards,

alex
